Like the rest of the country, the Washington metropolitan region has been hit hard by our nation's economic crisis. In Montgomery County, thousands of people are struggling to get the basics. Unfortunately, our County’s nonprofit service providers are hurting too. Food banks, shelters, and other service providers are flooded with demands for services, while the cost of doing business rises steadily.
In this very difficult time, The Community Foundation is leading the response.
In late 2008, The Community Foundation for the National Capital Region launched the Neighbors in Need Fund to help critical safety net organizations provide the basics—food, clothing, and shelter to thousands of families and individuals across the region. It is the largest fund of its type in the region and one of the largest in the country. The Community Foundation for Montgomery County – the Montgomery County arm of The Community Foundation for the National Capital Region – also launched the Neighbors in Need Montgomery Fund at this time, to shape a targeted philanthropic response to support our County’s most vulnerable neighbors.
Children, families and seniors in Montgomery County are hurting.
Many have lost jobs and have no health insurance. The alarming rise in the cost of food, transportation, and utilities has many residents struggling now more than ever. In the months ahead, some face eviction due to their inability to meet monthly rent. Still others face the prospect of not being able to pay their utility bills. You may be surprised to learn…
- The 430 beds in Montgomery County’s family and single-adult homeless shelters are all full. At one point in the past year, the homeless shelter waiting list was so high that the County had to temporarily place 61 families in motels. This does not include the many people “invisible” to the system, bouncing between the homes of friends and relatives.
- Manna Food Center provides free groceries to individuals and families at risk for hunger, as well as referrals to social services that can help residents regain financial stability. Manna responded to a 43% increase in demand this past year, serving an average of 145 clients every day. Now, Manna is serving on average of 157 clients daily and anticipates continued increases in the coming year.
- Montgomery CARES, a network of health clinics for uninsured, low-income adult residents, is on pace to serve 20% more patients than in Fiscal Year 2009 (July 2008 – June 2009) and 55% more patients than Fiscal Year 2008 (July 2007 – June 2008).
